It was 0830 on 1 September 2010 as I walked past a large London bookshop. The window display comprised 2 books - one of which was this much awaited Blair Memoirs. Mine was the first copy sold. Whilst political insiders will doubtless find much over which to raise their eyebrows, my own surprises were over his relationship with his immediate successor Gordon Brown. Don't you just hate it when people say "THEY KNEW" that such and such was going to happen but did nothing to prevent it from happening when they had the power to make a difference. In this work, Blair actually claims to have known Brown would be an awful Prime Minister. Well, we can all say that - after the event. More importantly, he also admits that he failed to sack Brown for fear of creating problems for the Labour Party and accelerating Brown's succession to Number Ten! I found this difficult to digest.

This is neither a pro nor anti-Blair review, it is based on his book and his revelations. A couple of years before standing down in the most diabolical fashion ever!, Blair stated he would reduce immigration to the United Kingdom to a certain figure by the September of that year. Eventually, however, nothing happened because he was unable to make any difference whatsoever. Now ask yourself this; If the Prime Minister is unable to change things, who can? Because of his disclosures in this book, for the very first time I have begun to see Blair as a weakling. Here is a man who admits to crying because a soldier was killed in Iraq. Well what did he expect? Here is a man who would not remove or even demote Gordon Brown for "FEAR" of the consequences. Not a strong man then! Here is a man who admits to having turned to drink because of the pressures of the job. Definitely not! Altogether, I began to feel so disappointed in this man, it came as something of a betrayal. Perhaps we were all fooled to some extent by the young, pretty boy, self assured image - although it is an image that has now also caught on in other parties!

The memoirs commences with the revelation (for those who did not know!) that, as he entered No 10 for the first time as Prime Minister, he had not previously held any government post whatsoever - not even a junior post. From there he went on to change the face of British politics, change the face of the Labour Party and introduce several American-style techniques by employing spin-doctors to provide the most positive gloss onto anything that might be perceived as unsavoury. It really is a candid and revealing exposé of the man in charge for all those years and for that he must be applauded.

Only now, however - some two years after stepping down, do we read this personal account of those years only to learn it appears he became a victim of his own spin. In so doing he leaves a lingering question over whether or not he was ever completely suited to the job. This book has changed my perception of so many aspects of British political life in general and Tony Blair in particular. No longer will I blame Gordon Brown for the financial mess in which the UK finds itself at this time. Why? Because it is abundantly clear from this book that Brown should never have been Chancellor and the only person able to remove him from that post had become frightened of replacing him.

My own political inclinations are simple; I subscribe to the view that one must vote for the party who will best look after your own personal interests. Having read this book, my personal assessment of Tony Blair - as a person, is reduced to the minimum ONE star rating. That said, the book itself is easily a FIVE star product and, therefore, well worth reading.

Much more interesting than the title sounds

QUICK REVIEW: A well written, concise, highly interesting story of two battles in the Pacific campaign of World War II. The story is gripping and gives a very realistic picture of war. It is experienced through the activities of one Marine Division and follows them from boot camp through the end of the war.
FULL REVIEW: We see these battles from the standpoint of "The Old Breed" which is the name given to the 1st Marine Division. More specifically, we see the story from the experiences of one soldier, the author - E. B. Sledge. We follow him from his decision to join the Marines through boot camp and then onto the two battles (Pelileu and Okinawa), which were among the worst of WWII. His division endures extremely harsh circumstances taking many casualties along the way. The realities of war are brought out strongly in this book which, as Sledge wrote, "made savages of us all." The pace of the book is good - it's not too fast and not too slow. He gives the important details needed to fully tell the experience without dwelling on any one aspect for too long. This is truly a great book, especially if you are at all interested in war.

If anyone still thinks war is a glorious experience ...

they need to read this. What an unassuming, straightforward account of two of the Pacific Theater's most terrible campaigns. Even more, what an account of life for the combat marine. Flies in c-rations, maggots on your clothes, sleep deprivation, and the sacrifice of men for their fellow men - it's all in this account. Never does Dr. Sledge, who was interviewed by Studs Terkel in The Good War, glorify himself in any way. He simply focuses on the daily struggle to survive and keep one's sanity. These were men who had a job to do, and they did it as well as they possibly could in sub-human conditions those who did not experience it could not believe. It's well-written in a down-to-earth style one might expect of a biology professor. The irony of a man who faced the dead every day returning home to study and teach about life is typical of men who went through his experiences.
This is a fine read about men at war against the Japanese, the elements, themselves, and the struggle to maintain sanity. Highly recommend.

This book will stay with you always . It is the best view into the mind of a WW 2 Marine I have ever encountered .The savagery of island fighting is described in a matter of fact manner .If there is an equal to this account , I have not found it . Mr. Sledge has done a magnificant job .

A sensitive and perceptive young college freshman from south Alabama, Eugene B. Sledge volunteered for Marine Corps officer training school during the middle of W.W. II. However, such was Sledge's desire to join the fighting before the war ended, he purposefully flunked out of school and promptly joined the ranks of the enlisted Marines.
Upon reporting to boot camp in San Diego, Sledge was introduced to his Drill Instructor with this eye-opening greeting: "If any of you idiots think you don't need to follow my orders, just step right out here and I'll beat your @ss right now. Your soul may belong to Jesus, but your @ss belongs to the Marines. You people are recruits. You're not Marines. You may not have what it takes to be Marines."
Fortunately, Sledge did indeed have what it took to be a Marine, and he has written WITH THE OLD BREED: AT PELELIU AND OKINAWA, an engaging personal chronicle of the horror of war as seen through the eyes of a young Marine grunt. Though this book is a personal account of historical events, it reads like a novel. Sledge is able to transform the course language of a salty Marine and the brutality of war into unembellished passages whose honesty have a lyrical beauty all their own:
"The situation was bad enough, but when the enemy artillery shells exploded in the area, the eruptions of soil and mud uncovered previously buried Japanese dead and scattered chunks of corpses. Like the area around our gun pits, the ridge was a stinking compost pile.
If a Marine slipped and slid down the back slope of the muddy ridge, he was apt to reach the bottom vomiting. I saw more than one man lose his footing and slip and slide all the way to the bottom only to stand up horror-stricken as he watched in disbelief while fat maggots tumbled out of his muddy dungaree pockets, cartridge belt, legging lacings, and the like. Then he and a buddy would shake or scrape them away with a piece of ammo box or a knife blade.
We didn't talk about such things. They were too horrible and obscene for even hardened veterans. The conditions taxed the toughest I knew almost to the point of screaming. Nor do authors normally write about such vileness; unless they have seen it with their own eyes, it is too preposterous to think that men could actually live and fight for days and nights under such terrible conditions and not be driven insane. But I saw much of it there on Okinawa and to the me the war was insanity."
WITH THE OLD BREED does not concern itself with a the strategic and tactical campaign of the Pacific Island hopping campaign. Rather, it is a a fascinating portrait of an ordinary young man's baptism under fire -- a first hand narrative of an ordinary young man's extraordinary bravery on a few remote Islands in the Pacific Ocean. No W.W.II library is complete without this book. Highly recommended.

Jeder, der sich eine Meinung des Konfliktes in Afghanistan bilden möchte, und zwar eine, die auf einer gründlichen Analyse basiert, sollte dieses Buch gelesen haben. Es scheint sauber recherchiert mit vielen Nachweisen im Anhang. Die Karten sind ausreichend für die Orientierung. Das Englisch ist lesbar und enthält eine überschaubare Anzahl von Worten,die über das Schulenglisch hinausgehen. Durch den Dünndruck bekommt man viel Buch fü's Geld. Absolut empfehlenswert.

Ahmed Rashid, kritischer Journalist aus Pakistan und intimer Kenner der Taliban hat mit seinem Buch: Descend into chaos. How the war against Islamic extremism is being lost in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia eine sehr gut recherchierte Arbeit abgeliefert, die alle Beteuerungen westlicher Politiker, dass man das Problem Afghanistan langsam in den Griff bekomme,als Unwissenheit, sträflichen Leichtsinn und Gefahr für den Frieden dieser Region bloßstellt. Es verschlägt einem manchmal die Sprache, wenn man Rashids Berichterstattung folgt und er aufzeigt, dass die USA, aber auch die europäischen NATO Partner keine Strategie hatten noch haben, um nicht nur Afghanistan wieder zu einem funktionierenden Staatsgebilde zu verhelfen, sondern - was viel wichtiger ist - Pakistan zu stabilisieren und es aus dem unsäglichen Einfluss der Militärs zu befreien. Denn der durch Militärs geführte pakistanische Geheimdienst stützte und stützt die Taliban, Aufständische in Kashmir, aber auch Terroristen in Indien. Dieses Buch sollten westliche Politiker dringend lesen, um - falls es nicht schon zu spät ist - noch Lehren daraus ziehen zu können und endlich eine tragfähige Strategie für die Zukunft der gesamten Region zu entwickeln.

Pflichtlektüre zum Thema "Afpak"

Rashids hervorragend recherchiertes Buch ist absolute Pflichtlektüre für jeden, der sich für die Misere am Hindukusch interessiert. Der Author kennt viele der bestimmenden Akteure persöhnlich, so zum Beispiel Hamid Karzai, nimmt aber dennoch kein Blatt vor den Mund, wenn er diesen besonders wegen seiner Parteien-feindlichen Haltung kritisiert. So hat Afghanistan bis heute noch keine einzige echte Partei, sondern nur "Warlord-Wahlvereine". Auch die unfassbare Schlamperei seitens der USA unter Bush und der Europäer in der NATO werden ausgeleuchtet, insbesondere die Deutschen bekommen hier ihr Fett weg, die wirklich praktisch jedes Versprechen NICHT eingehalten haben, ich sage nur 80.000(!!!) Polizisten ausbilden wollen mit lächerlichen 20 Ausbildern und einem Etat der nicht mal für 10 Kilometer Autobahn reicht.

The best of investigative journalism ever

This book deserves 10 stars for its factual account, investigative style, and straightforward no nonsense writing. The facts presented in this book are awesome and could have only been written by someone who knew the subject from beginning to end. It is at once an excellent combination of history, a thriller, a foreign policy and international relations read all in one, one cannot put it down upon starting to read it despite its size.

It is a complete account of what transpired in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, the vacillating U.S. foreign policy, and the people within and without who made the current chaos the gigantic problem that it is. The author has excellent grasp of the thinking, beliefs, and culture in these places. A MUST READ. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED with COMMENDATIONS as the best book on the subject.

Tony Judt seems to be the voice of Europe. Many historians obviously want to prove that a certain ideology is right, f.i. that capitalism is better than communism or that EU is the correct way for the countries of Europe. Judt shows us all the sophistic ambiguities of the rim of the Euro-Asian continent. And that makes the book worth buying.

The spirit of youth

J.K. writes about Christopher McCandless, a young man who ventured out into the wilderness of Alaska in the spring of 1992, stayed there by himself for four months, and eventually died due to malnutrition.

The story is well paced and compact (around 200 pages), and while seeming very thoroughly researched, it presents itself in a rather emotional form of journalism that even borders gonzo at times.

I liked it.

The thing I liked most about it was the strong empathy pulsing from the author towards the young and reckless McCandless. J.K. clearly avoids idolizing the young man, but when he talks about his own mountaineering experiences in the 70s, I cant help but find it apologetic for McCandless behavior fifteen years later.

There is one paragraph that I highlighted: It is hardly unusual for a young man to be drawn to a pursuit considered reckless by his elders; engaging in risky behavior is a rite of passage in our culture no less than in most others. Danger has always held a certain allure.

Zu Chris Mccandless Ausbruch aus gesellschaftlichen Denkmustern und seine Wanderung in die "Wildnis" ist viel geschrieben und diskutiert worden.
Wer sich hier ein bißchen umtut sieht schnell, daß Krakauers Buch stark polarisiert. Entweder wird Chris Mccandless von seinen Anhängern enthusiastisch gefeiert oder es wird mit erstaunlicher Wut über sein Scheitern gelästert.

Ich habe dieses Buch geliebt. Es hat mich beschäftigt wie schon lange kein Buch mehr. Entscheidend sind für mich nicht Chris mögliche Fehler und warum er es nicht geschafft hat, der Wildnis wieder zu entkommen. Entscheidend ist für mich, warum er in die Wildnis gegangen ist.

Hier liegt die Stärke von Krakauers Buch, detailreich schildert er die Motive eines jungen Mannes aus wohlbehüteten Verhältnissen, radikal aus einem vorgebenen Lebenslauf auszubrechen und sich auf eine Wanderung quer durch Amerika zu begeben.
Gleichzeitig zeichnet Krakauer in groben Zügen eine amerikanische Tradition von Everett Ruess bis zu sich selbst nach, in der einzelne immer wieder aus festgefahrenen Lebensläufen ausbrachen, um in der Wildnis zu sich selbst zu finden.

Natürlich, und hier setzt vielfach die Kritik an Krakauer an, ist sein Buch nur eine Interpretation dessen, was möglicherweise wirklich geschehen ist.
Eine Schwäche seines Buchs ist ganz klar die Deutung der Umstände die zu Chris Mccandless Tod führten.

Was Krakauer immer nur am Rande erwähnt, ist, daß Chris tatsächlich eine Karte dabei hatte und er für seine Wanderung in die Wildnis gezielt auf dieser Karte den Stampede Trail ausgewählt hat.
Auf jeder Karte Alaskas, die den Stampede Trail verzeichnet, ist immer auch der Denali Park, einer der touristisch meistbesuchten Parks Alaskas verzeichnet. Im Sommer ist hier wirklich was los und Chris befand sich in Laufnähe des Parks.

Daß Chris sich in irgendeiner Weise, durch wilde Kartoffelpflanzen vergiftet hat, ist durch toxikologische Gutachten widerlegt worden. Chris Mccandless ist verhungert.

Völlig außer Acht läßt Krakauer das SOS Schreiben, das Chris an den Bus gepinnt hatte. Hier schreibt er, daß er verletzt ist. Wer sich das berühmte Foto, das Chris sitzend im karierten Hemd vor dem Bus zeigt, genau anschaut, wird feststellen, daß der rechte Ärmel seines Hemdes leer ist. Er hat den rechten Arm unter dem Hemd und nicht im Ärmel, was auf eine Schulterverletzung hindeutet, die übrigens bei einer Autopsie nicht zwingend festgestellt werden kann.

Fazit: Absolut lesenswert. Natürlich schildert Krakauer seine Interpretation des Geschehens, aber genau das macht das Buch auch so spannend.

the call of the wild

First things first: "Into the wild" is not a novel but rather a lengthy reportage in book format. Structure and style are strongly journalistic.

Taking McCandless's vagabond life as a starting point, the author reflects on (as Jack London put it) the call of the wild, the yearning for isolation and loneliness and the will to test one's limits surrounded by a challenging nature. Roughly half of the book tells McCandless's story and how he ended up as a twentysomething leading a vagabond life in America's Southwest till he went to Alaska where he died of starvation. (The book starts with McCandless's death so don't think I'm spoiling it!) ;-)

The other half deals with other rather famous people who succumbed to the call of the wild, Krakauer being one of them himself - yet unlike others he survived. The author also interviews McCandless's family, friends and acquaintances. He highlights the loss and pain the family suffered.

Ultimately, Krakauer thinks that youth, idealism and a certain unwillingness to forgive other people's mistakes are some of the main reasons why people go into the wild and severe all contact with their families.

großartig spannender tatsachenbericht

der bergsteiger und journalist j. krakauer schildert im vorliegenden buch einen erschütterneden tatsachenbericht um das verschwinden des jungen chris mccandless in der wildnis alaskas. die meinungen über seinen tod sind sehr unterschiedlich, von anfeindungen wegen seines fahrlässigen, schlecht vorbereiteten "abenteuers" bis hin zur bewunderung seines mutes. krakauer hat seinen roman sehr gut mit hilfe der familie von chris und zahlreichen reisebegenungen recherchiert.

die geschichte ist sehr spannend und fast wie eine dokumetation aufgebaut. krakauer versucht auch nicht eine sympathie oder antipathie für den helden zu polarisieren. es bleibt immer noch dem leser überlassen ob man mccandless handlungen gutheißt oder ihn als dummen jungen abenteurer sieht.

für mich ist das eindringen in die wilde schönheit der natur, die einsamkeit und das überleben in der wildnis ein interessanter gedanke. doch alle handlungen von chris kann ich nicht nachvollziehen, zb warum er sein geld verbrennt - das scheint mir dumm und trotzig.

die verfilmung von sean penn interessiert mich sehr, doch ich wollte zuerst das buch lesen um eigene bilder im kopf entstehen zu lassen. bin also sehr gespannt.

das buch ist auf jedenfall sehr empfehlenswert und erschütternd.

great experience

Jon Krakauer really earns respect for his writing and the result of his research after the death of this lost soul. He describes the way of this young guy to Alaska using his diary and what people said who met him. He travels the way himself and so his own impressions make this work complete.
The whole time I was thinking what does he want? Why does he do this? Why does he die? I was confused, but I felt what the guy must have been through. He does what other people won't because of fear.
And it hurt so bad that he really wanted to go back home and couldn't.
It is not really a novel. It is more a report. Sometimes I wished for some more objectiveness. This guy met all this crazy good people he could have been murdered or whatever alone on the road like that, but he made friends and was not seeing what he had. This book should have been about the people giving a lost human shelter.

Sein Thema ist vermeintlich etwas "enger" geworden: vom gesamte Universum seines letzten Bestsellers zum Alltag auf der Erde und seiner Geschichte. Sein Ansatz bleibt der gleiche: mehr oder weniger alles, was er interessant findet, in ein Buch zu stecken -- wobei er darin glücklicherweise ein absoluter Experte ist. Bill Bryson macht eine Reise in seinem eigenen Haus (einem alten Pfarrhaus im verschlafenen Norfolk) und wandert von Zimmer zu Zimmer, während er nachforscht, woher all die Dinge stammen, die ihn umgeben. Auf seinem Weg macht er erstaunliche, überraschende und nicht zuletzt humorvolle Exkurse über die Geschichte der Architektur, Entdeckung der Elektrizität, Erfindung und Entwicklung moderner Toiletten und unzähliges mehr. Und zu seinem persönlichen Unbehagen trifft er dabei auch auf eine erschreckende Vielzahl von Epidemien, Krankheiten und sonstigen Gefahren für Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden. (Wobei, wie wir wissen, Bryson fast immer dann in humorvoller Höchstform ist.)

Dabei stößt er auf interessante Fragen: Warum haben wir (aus einer Auswahl von hunderten von Gewürzen) schlussendlich bevorzugt Salz und Pfeffer auf dem Tisch (und warum nicht zum Beispiel Salz und Kardamom)? Warum haben Gabeln vier Zinken statt zwei oder sechs? Warum haben Japaner Angst vorm Treppensteigen? Bryson kümmert sich erneut um Fakten und Phänomene, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zu langsam entwickelt haben, um bemerkt zu werden, und bietet in "At Home" die gleiche unbändige Neugier, unwiderstehlichen Witz und unterhaltsame, erhellende Erzählung, die "Eine kurze Geschichte von fast Allem" zu einem der erfolgreichsten Sachbücher der letzten Jahre gemacht haben. Wobei er wenig eigene Forschung betreibt, aber sich erneut als Meister der Recherche und unterhaltsamen Zusammenstellung präsentiert (der Anhang des Buches hat eine fast 30-seitige Literaturquellenliste).

Bill Brysons außergewöhnliche Leistung mit "At Home" ist, den Blick auf das gesamte menschliche Leben durch ein "häusliches" Teleskop zu machen und dabei für uns alle festzustellen, dass unser Zuhause nicht der Zufluchtsort vor kultureller und sozialer Geschichte ist, sondern der Platz, an dem Geschichte beginnt und endet.

At Home: a short history --- of almost everything else ... (or: new facts and funny stories from Bill Bryson)

His subject is supposedly becoming more focussed: from the entire universe of his latest bestseller to life on Earth and its history. His approach remains the same: to put more or less everything he finds interesting in a book -- luckily to say, he is an absolute expert in doing so. Bill Bryson makes a journey within and around his own house (an old rectory in sleepy Norfolk) and wanders from room to room while he investigates where the things around him come from. Along the way he makes some amazing, surprising and humorous digressions about the history of architecture, the discovery of electricity, the invention and development of modern toilets and countless more bits and pieces. And to his personal discomfort, he learns about a frightening number of epidemics, diseases and other threats to health and well-being. (But, as we know, in those cases Bryson is almost always at his humorous best.)

He encounters interesting questions: Why do we finally have (from a selection of hundreds of spices) preferred salt and pepper to be on the dining table (and why not, for example, salt and cardamom)? Why do forks have four prongs instead of two or six? Why are the Japanese afraid of climbing stairs? Bryson brilliantly collects facts and phenomena that have evolved over the centuries too slow to be noticed, and, in "At Home", shows the same irrepressible curiosity, irresistible wit and entertaining, illuminating narrative that made "A Short History of Nearly Everything" to one of the most successful non-fiction books of recent years. He presents himself as a master of research and entertaining compilation again (the book has an almost 30 pages literature source list appendix).

Bill Bryson's extraordinary achievement with "At Home" is to view all human life through a "domestic" telescope and to discover (for all of us) that our homes are not the safe haven and refuge from cultural and social history -- but simply the place where history begins and ends.

Among the book's interesting revelations is Mandela's ambivalence toward his lifetime of devotion to public works. It cost him two marriages and kept him distant from a family life he might otherwise have cherished. Zusammen mit Malcolm X und Martin Luther King gilt Nelson Mandela als bedeutendster Vertreter im Kampf gegen staatliche Rassendiskriminierung, der 1994 zum ersten demokratisch gewählten schwarzen Präsidenten Südafrikas werden konnte und damit nach dem Ende der Apartheid, die große Wende verkörperte, die den African National Congress als stimmenstärkste Partei aus der Illegalität direkt ins Parlament brachte und das Land einer demokratischen Reform unterzog. Doch der lange Weg zur Freiheit war steinig gewesen, es hatte fast Mandelas gesamtes Leben lange gedauert, um die Unterdrückung von Schwarzen und Farbigen abzuschaffen, deren Situation zwischenzeitlich durch das Apartheids-Regime sogar noch verschlimmert wurde und 27 Jahre davon verbrachte Mandela selbst in Haft, nachdem der ANC gezwungen wurde in den Untergrund zu gehen.

In jenen 27 Jahren war es Mandela die meiste Zeit über nicht einmal gestattet Besuch empfangen, dennoch gelang es ihm mit Hilfe seiner mitgefangenen ANC-Kollegen ab 1972 handgeschriebene Fragmente seiner Biografie nach draußen zu schmuggeln. Diese Fragmente zusammengefügt ergeben einer der monumentalsten Autobiografien der Weltliteratur, die von Mandelas Geburt 1918 bis zur Amtseinführung 1994 reicht und zugleich die beste Biografie Nelson Mandelas ist.

Der junge Mann der in seiner Jugend nach Bildung strebte und beschloss andere Wege zu gehen, als jene die ihm vorbestimmt schienen, ahnte damals selbstverständlich noch nicht dass seine Flucht vor den Konventionen ihn nicht nur in eine größere Welt sondern auch in Konflikt mit deren Autoritäten bringen würde. Doch mit seinem Studienabschluss, der damals nur wenigen Schwarzen überhaupt möglich war und dem Beginn seiner politischen Aktivität im ANC trat Mandela in den Kampf gegen Unterdrückung und Ausgrenzung der nicht-weißen Bevölkerung ein. Doch die Proteste und Demonstrationen schienen wirkungslos, nachdem die dominierende National Party, die 1948 an die Macht kam und das System der Apartheid institutionalisierte und dahingehend verschärfte, dass jedwede Aufweichung zuvor, wieder durch strengere Gesetze beseitigt wurde, eine immer aggressivere Politik verfolgte und ganze Stadtteile mit Polizeigewalt räumen und niederreißen ließ, um die schwarzen Viertel weiter weg zu verlegen.

Nach wiederholten Verhaftungen und Zusammenstößen mit den Behörden wurde Nelson Mandela schließlich einer der Mitbegründer des Umkhonto We Sizwe (kurz MK, Zulu für Speer der Nation), nachdem sich der gewaltlose Widerstand als Sackgasse erwiesen hatte. Neben anfänglichen Sprengstoffanschlägen auf Strommasten, Kraftwerke, Wasserwerke und andere Infrastrukturziele, setzte der MK als geheime Tochterorganisation des ANC auch auf die Entwicklung von Beziehungen zu anderen afrikanischen Staaten, die mit finanziellen Zuwendungen den Kampf gegen die Apartheid fördern sollten. Zugleich galt es als großes Ziel, durch die Verbündeten an Möglichkeiten zu gelangen, junge MK-Rekruten in Trainingscamps zu schicken und für den Einsatz in südafrikanischen Streitkräften vorzubereiten, damit man wenigstens in dieser Hinsicht mit dem Regime gleichziehen könnte. Doch die Hinwendung zur Gewalt gegen die dessen ungeachtet überlegene Staatsgewalt führte zur Verhaftung des nahezu gesamten MK-Führung und nach dessen Rückkehr auch Nelson Mandelas. Im Rivonia Prozess sahen sich die Angeklagten wegen Terrors, Umsturzversuches und kommunistischer Aktivitäten schließlich sogar der Todesstrafe gegenüber, die jedoch aufgrund der ohnehin angespannten Lage in lebenslange Haftstrafen umgewandelt wurde. Es begannen Jahrzehnte, in denen die Häftlinge von der Außenwelt so gut wie abgeschnitten waren und dennoch ihren Kampf nie aufgaben und Mandela neben den Arbeiten an seiner Biografie, sogar die Zeit fand, sich erfolgreich für eine Verbesserung der Haftbedingungen einzusetzen, während durch die Bemühungen von exilierten ANC-Vertretern wie Oliver Tambo eine internationale Protestbewegung gegen die Apartheid und Mandelas Inhaftierung geschaffen werden konnte.

Mit seiner Entlassung in die Freiheit 1990 trat Mandela jedoch nicht für eine Umkehrung der Verhältnisse ein, sondern einen Ausgleich, eine Gleichberechtigung und Versöhnung, für die er internationale Aufmerksamkeit und den Friedensnobelpreis erhielt. Der "Ghandi Südafrikas" wurde sogar Präsident und auch wenn er manche der an seine Regierung gestellten Erwartungen nicht erfüllen konnte, setzte er doch die richtigen Zeichen und unternahm genau jene Schritte, um eine Eskalation zu vermeiden und eine bessere Zukunft möglich zu machen.

Mandelas Buch bewegt, denn einerseits ist es ein sehr persönliches Werk, in dem Mandela seine Lebensgeschichte erzählt, aber zugleich auch eine Schilderung der Entwicklung des Kampfes gegen die Apartheid aus seiner Sicht und damit vom politischen und geschichtlichen Standpunkt noch umso interessanter. Hätte nicht Mandela selbst das Buch geschrieben, der Historiker oder Journalist dem es gelungen wäre, hätte ein Meisterwerk geschaffen, das wohl den Titel "Nelson Mandela and South Africas long walk to Freedom" tragen würde, denn die Verbindung zwischen Biografie und persönlichen Erlebnisbericht sucht ihresgleichen. Der Stil ist geprägt von einer sachlichen Nüchternheit und klaren Sprache, die nicht den Irrungen der Verklärung und Romantisierung erliegt. Mandela bleibt seinen Wurzeln treu und schafft auch kulturelles Verständnis, doch er stellt seine Herkunft nicht über andere und bleibt der Sachlichkeit ergeben. Was ihm so fast nebenbei noch gelingt, ist es dem Leser die Geschichte derart plastisch zu vermitteln, dass er sie aus Mandelas Perspektive miterlebt.

Fazit:
Nelson Mandelas Autobiografie gehört zu jenen Werken die man als geschichtlich und auch politisch interessierter Mensch unbedingt gelesen haben sollte, nicht umsonst gilt das Werk aufgrund seiner sprachlichen Eindringlichkeit auch als Weltliteratur.

Portrait of a Leader for All Times

If you read only one autobiography this year, I recommend this one.

Leadership breakthroughs are few and far between. They are even rarer in the political arena. Although I had closely followed the path to an integrated democracy in South Africa (and worked hard on the anti-apartheid sanctions and boycotts), much of Nelson Mandela's struggle was hidden to me at the time. Only after the reconciliation had gone on for a number of years did it become apart how remarkable this man's contribution has been.

Recently, I read Playing the Enemy which described some of the nuances in how Mandela conceived of creating a peaceful transition through an unauthorized sole negotiation from a prison cell. Those stories impressed me even more. Now, I had to read the autobiography. And I'm glad I did.

Let me warn you, however, that Nelson Mandela is so self-effacing that the real story of what he accomplished and how he did it doesn't fully come through in the autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. I recommend that you read Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation first.

What the autobiography will do is show the cultural and social backgrounds of the struggle and how critical it was that Mandela be a man of honor, principle, and loyalty. He was a leader for the whole nation even when many people didn't want him to be in the nation. It's a remarkable way to be, a way that few people can accomplish.

The apartheid system was as vile a way to treat citizens as anything that has come along since Germany in the 1930s. It's hard to imagine that it arose after World War II and was so difficult to break.

The treatment of the African National Congress's leaders will appall you. Their grace will delight you.

May every nation have a Nelson Mandela to lead it!

Die Autobiographie Mandelas bietet meines Erachtens eine gute Möglichkeit, die jüngere Geschichte Südafrikas kennenzulernen. Dies war zumindest meine Intention, als ich das Buch bestellte, und ich bin in dieser Hinsicht keineswegs enttäuscht worden. Die Geschichte beginnt in der Zeit zwischen den Weltkriegen, und es kann die Etablierung der Apartheid anhand zahlreicher legislativer Beschlüsse nachvollzogen werden. Im Vordergrund steht natürlich die Widerstandsbewegung des ANC, aber nebenbei erfährt man einiges über diverse "tribes" und "chiefs" in Südafrika, über das Bildungswesen, das politische System und andere landesspezifische Besonderheiten.

Nelson Mandela's biography "Long Walk to Freedom" deals with Mandela's difficulties and his success in his struggle for freedom and equality in South Africa.
He depicts his experiences an thoughts while he was in prison for several decades, during his childhood and growing up, and his travels in west until the beginning of his presidency.
Mandela shows how one man can win a nation for a revolution, for democracy and freedom, for human rights, justice, and peace.
Reading mandela's biogrophy, you get a sense for the value of freedom and civil rights. This book is not only inspiring, it reveals the necessarity of equality in a free country with a free political system.
The Nobel Peace Prize Winner is a symbol of the overwhelming power of freedom and a further proof that oppression will not and cannot endure forever.
Mandela's story is the visualization of Kennedy's words in Berlin: "Freedom is indivisible, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free"
Due to the message Mandela is able to transmit in his touching report, I can only give Five Stars for this extraordinary biography.
In the end, I can only quote the Bosten Sunday Globe: "Should be read by every Person alive"

Die Rückmeldungen waren absolut positiv, vor allem auch im Zusammenhang mit dem Vergleich von Buch und Film.

I first saw the Miramax movie starring Kenneth Branagh, which was based upon this book. I was intrigued enough by the film to read this book. I was not disappointed. This book is certainly a testament to the human spirit. It also reveals the harsh, paternalistic and racist policies that the Australian government imposed upon its Aboriginal population.

In 1931, the Australian government issued an edict that mandated that all Aboriginal and part Aboriginal children were to be forcibly removed from their homes and taken to special settlements where they were to be assimilated. There, while living in inhumane and degrading conditions, they would be taught to be culturally white, would be mandated to speak English only, and would be trained to be domestic help or laborers in white households.

The author tells the reader the story of three young girls, Mollie, Gracie, and Daisy, who had Aboriginal mothers and White fathers. Ranging in age from nine to fifteen years old, the three girls were forcibly removed from their loving families and taken to a special settlement. The girls rebelled against this system, and, homesick, escaped from such a settlement. They left with iterally just the clothes on their back. Their only guide home would be a rabbit-proof fence that stretched for over a thousand miles across Australia.

The girls Aboriginal heritage and survival skills would come in handy throughout their nearly nine week long trek across Australia, as they were forced to subsist on the land and the occasional kindness from strangers. They had to endure thirst, hunger, and danger, while avoiding being caught along the way by professional trackers, police on the lookout for them, and white settlers that were unsympathetic to their situation.

This story is a most personal one for the author, as one of the girls, Molly, is the author's mother. Told in a straightforward, factual manner, it is an incredible story that is an indictment of the Australian government's racist policies against its Aboriginal people and its imperialistic self-proclaimed superiority over them.

doch eine Enttäuschung nach dem Buch

Während einige den Film interessanter und spannender als das Buch finden, kann ich mich diesem Urteil gar nicht anschließen.

Der Film an sich ist nicht schlecht! Das Buch baut die Geschichte jedoch viel mehr auf, während der Film direkt mittendrin einsteigt und man denkt "huch? hier sind wir schon?" All das geschichtlich und kulturell wertvolle und aufwühlende wird im Film höchstens angekratzt. Dafür gibt es lang(atmig)e, dialogfreie Szenen zwischen den drei Mädchen.

Mein Urteil: Wer das Buch gelesen hat, für den ist der Film nur dann ein Gewinn, wenn er prinzipielle Probleme damit hat, sich die Weiten und die Landschaft Australiens vorzustellen. ;-)

Actually, the movie is better

Often, if a novel or a book in general is turned into a film, it does not exactly get better. This time it does. The film is definitely more moving than the book, mostly because of the narrator's style, which somehow does not manage to enthrall the reader too much. (Compare what the preceding reviewer says.) Still, it is interesting reading, especially if you want to compare the similarities and the differences between the book and the film.
